Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of understanding the effect of students' reading habits on their achievements in mathematics. A mixed-methods approach was employed, wherein qualitative data obtained through one-on-one and focus group interviews was utilized to comprehend students' reading habits and their connections with mathematics. The quantitative method aimed to measure students' reading frequencies and their achievements in mathematics through surveys and tests. The research encompasses findings derived from test results and interviews conducted with a group of 72 students between the ages of 11-12. According to the qualitative data, students' reading habits exhibited diversity. Some students perceived reading as a pleasure and integrated it into their daily lives. Particularly, students who developed a reading habit willingly expressed feeling incomplete during times of non-reading. Additionally, students who read more books demonstrated higher performance in mathematics tests. This finding is statistically significant (p < 0.05). The statistical analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between the frequency of reading and mathematics achievements. These results indicate a positive impact of students' reading habits on their mathematics achievements. Therefore, educators and parents can adopt an effective strategy for enhancing mathematics performance by encouraging students to cultivate a habit of reading. By integrating qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, this study has provided a comprehensive assessment and valuable insights into students' learning processes. In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the significance of promoting reading as a key strategy for academic success. Hence, educators and families should intensify their efforts to encourage students to adopt a reading habit. This study, by offering in-depth insights into students' learning processes, may contribute to shaping educational policies and practices.
