AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) APPLICATIONS IN SUSTAINABLE URBAN PLANNING

Abstract

Changes in the economic, social, cultural, and political fields in the 21st century have led to developments in information technologies. Augmented reality with the developments in information technologies; it is used in many different fields, especially in fields such as military, health, architecture, urban planning, urban design, and education. The use of information technologies in every field brings together technological developments and planning approaches in urban places. Developing and transforming cities in the information age; It turns to augmented reality applications to ensure social, economic, and environmental sustainability and to increase the quality of life by facilitating the lives of individuals. In this context, augmented reality applications are an information and communication technology that can produce rational and innovative solutions to urban problems and provide fundamental contributions to cities. The application of augmented reality in the field of sustainable urban planning today; It is important in terms of spreading a participatory approach, having high perceptibility of three-dimensional (3D) virtual visualization to two-dimensional (2D) visual presentation techniques, creating safer, modern, comfortable spaces, facilitating human life, and supporting sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of the study is to investigate the potentials of augmented reality technology in sustainable urban planning and to discuss the importance of this technology on sustainable cities. The study reveals the effects of augmented reality applications on the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of cities with the help of technology.
